Prof. Wolfgang Schleich, Universität Ulm, spricht am Montag, 23. November 2026, 17.00 Uhr s.t., im HS 04 (F.10.01) über das Thema "The Birth of Quantum Mechanics and its Human Aspects".

Abstract

The 100th anniversary of the birth of quantum mechanics last year and this year, invites us to read again the seminal articles of the founding fathers of quantum mechanics.

However, we might be surprised to learn that the theory which today forms one off the pillars of modern physics, did not emerge in the straightforward way that we teach it today.

In this talk we summarize key papers of the year 1926/27 paving the way to quantum mechanics and point out minor misunderstandings. Here we focus especially on wave mechanics and the birth of the Schrödinger equation. In particular, we demonstrate that at the heart of the Schrödinger equation is a mathematical identity of complex numbers.

Physics is made by human beings. For this reason, it is obvious that human aspects also played a major role in the creation of quantum mechanics.

We provide some examples for “interesting relations” between the main players at the time.
